Alla fine del 1984, un reportage della BBC portò all’attenzione pubblica la carestia che aveva colpito l’Etiopia nel periodo 1984-1985. Il cantante irlandese Bob Geldof, che aveva visto il reportage, ne fu talmente colpito da decidere di produrre un disco i cui ricavati avrebbero potuto alleviare la situazione. Conscio che avrebbe potuto fare ben poco da solo contattò Midge Ure del gruppo Ultravox ed insieme scrissero il brano Do They Know It’s Christmas? In breve tempo Geldof mise insieme numerosi artisti, uniti sotto il nome collettivo di Band Aid.
